But I AM Kind to Lady Caro Lamb!

Seaham Hall (October 12 1814)

Your letter has restored my cheerfulness, which was sinking under your doubts.

I believe I was interested for Ly. C’s escape from all the dangers with which she had encompassed herself, in the same way as you were – and I thought much more of her after a kind of request which you made to me.

Do you remember saying that you wished I would take some interest in her fate?

I have still some compassionate kindness for her – I did not think you to blame in regard to her.

I am called to my Mother, about whom I still feel a little uneasiness. She is so much reduced by her later illness that everything overpowers her.
